Anesthesia Options
At Legacy Oral, Facial & Dental Implant Surgery, patient comfort and safety are central to every treatment plan. We offer a range of anesthesia and sedation options to help ensure procedures are performed as comfortably and safely as possible. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option based on your procedure, medical history, and individual comfort needs.
Understanding Your Anesthesia Options
Anesthesia plays an important role in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Whether your procedure is routine or complex, we take time to explain your options and answer questions so you feel informed and confident before treatment.
Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is used to numb a specific area of the mouth during treatment. You remain fully awake, but the treatment area is desensitized to prevent discomfort.
Local anesthesia is commonly used for:
- Simple tooth extractions
- Minor oral surgery procedures
- Situations where minimal sedation is appropriate
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It helps promote relaxation while allowing you to remain awake and responsive throughout your procedure.
Nitrous oxide may be recommended for patients who:
- Feel anxious about dental or surgical treatment
- Are undergoing shorter or less complex procedures
- Prefer a lighter form of sedation
Twilight Sedation (IV Sedation)
Twilight sedation, also known as IV sedation, is administered through a vein and allows you to remain in a deeply relaxed state during treatment. Many patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
IV sedation is often used for:
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Dental implant placement
- Longer or more involved procedures
Vital signs are continuously monitored to support safety throughout treatment.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia places you in a fully unconscious state during your procedure. This option is typically reserved for more complex surgical cases or when deep anesthesia is clinically appropriate.
General anesthesia may be recommended for:
- Complex oral or facial surgery
- Extensive procedures
- Patients with specific medical or surgical needs
Your surgeon will review all considerations and provide clear pre-operative instructions if general anesthesia is planned.
Safety and Personalized Planning
Every anesthesia recommendation is made with patient safety as the top priority. Your surgeon will review your medical history, medications, and treatment plan before determining the appropriate anesthesia option. If sedation or anesthesia is planned, you will receive clear pre-operative instructions in advance.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which anesthesia option is right for me?
Your surgeon will recommend the best option based on your procedure, medical history, and comfort level.
Will I be awake during my procedure?
Some options, such as local anesthesia and nitrous oxide, allow you to remain awake. IV sedation and general anesthesia result in deeper levels of sedation.
Is anesthesia safe for oral surgery?
When administered by trained professionals with proper monitoring, anesthesia is considered safe. Your care team reviews all factors before treatment.
Will I receive instructions before sedation?
Yes. If sedation or general anesthesia is planned, you will receive specific pre-operative instructions prior to your procedure.
Can anesthesia help with dental anxiety?
Yes. Sedation options are often recommended to help patients feel calm and comfortable during treatment.
